Race for Life Vs Relay for Life – How are they different?

Cancer Research UK raise funds to allow scientists and doctors to carry out cancer research.  Apparently they employ 4,500 scientists and spend £6 million pounds on research every week, so you can see they need to do a lot of fundraising!

They raise money in many different ways however two events you may have heard of are the “Race for Life” and the “Relay for Life“. Both of these events run locally, in 2014 you could Race for Life, in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Inverness Perth and Stirling. If racing isn’t your thing, in 2014 you could “Relay for Life” in Arbroath, Caithness, Shetland, Dundee and Blairgowrie.

So how are they different?  The Race for Life is a 5 km walk, run or jog and participants collect sponsorship.  5 km is about 3 miles, a lot of people think you have to run, but you don’t!

The Relay for Life is, as the name suggests, one big relay.  Instead of collecting sponsorship, you pay to enter (£15 for adults, £5 for kids).  You can enter in teams, and one person from each team should be walking on the relay track throughout the event. Some events run for 12 hours some for 24!  Anyone can get involved and you can do 1 lap or 100…

So why am I writing about the Race for Life and the Relay for Life, when most of the 2014 events have finished?  Well, people are trying to organise the 2015 events so if you want to help out now is a great time to get involved.

Information about the 2015 Race for Life Events will be available early next year.  Plans are well underway to organise the Peterhead Relay for Life on the 25th of July 2015. If you would like to help out either in advance or on the day, you can get in touch here. There are plans to run a Relay for Life in Huntly, so watch this space for more information!

  • The Relay For Life Huntly is now officially a successful relay.

Taking part for the 1st time this year, every effort has been made to inform individuals, groups, organisations and businesses that we are looking for as much support as possible.

It was announced at the launch at the Gordon Arms Arms Hotel on 23 February that a main sponsor had been secured and that 6 teams had already entered. Pipeline Technique Ltd, an oil-related company is currently relocating to Huntly.

The amount of teams has since doubled and sponsors are coming forward.
An auction night is planned on Friday, 1 May at the Huntly Golf Club where unusual and rare items will be handed out to the highest bidders. Free entry.

This was a brilliant and well organised event which i was delighted to be part of. There was a tremendous buzz during the whole event and a great big thank you should go to Nathalie and all her committee for their hard work and dedication to this relay.
The candle of hope ceremony was particulary emotional and thanks to Lesley Pirie and Zoe King for their hard work with organising and setting out the candles.
Well Done and hope this event is repeated
