For Cancer Support Charities

Course 1

Understanding Cancer Cell Biology

Just what is cancer? What does a cancer cell actually look like? Why is cancer so difficult to treat? What new treatments are available and how do they work?

All these questions and more will be addressed in a one hour talk, illustrated with lots of pictures. The speaker is a research scientist with seven years laboratory research experience and there will be plenty of opportunity for you to discuss the questions you are frequently asked in your work.

Course 2

Understanding Genetics

What is a gene? Is cancer a genetic disease? What does it mean when we say “cancer runs in the family”? Can we affect our genes by what we eat or what we do?

This one hour talk will help you to answer these questions and give you an insight into the latest medical research being carried out on these topics. There will be time for questions and debate and a chance to discuss any questions you may have been asked in the course of your work.

How will my staff benefit?

These courses are specifically designed to help people running cancer support charities and advice centres deepen their knowledge of cancer research. They are designed for people with an interest in, but no formal training in biology and will help keep your staff and volunteers up to date with the latest advances in cancer biology.
